Julie McCurdy, Housing Organizer, Sisters Of The Road
Burnside: A Community is coming together and we’re excited to bring photographer Kathleen Ryan back to Portland to celebrate the reprinting of her book. Israel Bayer, Executive Director at Street Roots, has provided a lovely introduction and Publication Studio has produced the first editions of the book.
Had a great meeting with Julie McCurdy, Housing Organizer at Sisters Of The Road. We talked about the recently opened Bud Clark Commons and how to best address the lack of affordable public housing in downtown Portland. She told me of her work with the Empowered Voices Media Project, a program that provides video equipment and editing facilities for homeless people to create their own documentaries. Check this excellent video produced as part of the program.
Also met with Urban Designer Suenn Ho, who spoke of her work designing 16 plaques in Old Town commemorating the cultural diversity of the area. She related a great anecdote about a poem hidden underneath one of the plaques — you’ll have to come to the lecture to hear the whole story!
Order a copy of the book here. Or check out this 4-book special we’re offering. Full details on the lecture here.
