Tom McCall’s 100th Birthday Party
Saturday, March 23, 8PM
Jack London Bar
401 SW Alder St
Cost: $5 at door*
Join Kickass OR History, Nestucca Spit Press and Know Your City as we partner to host a birthday party in honor of the late former Governor Tom McCall. The evening will feature multimedia presentations in tribute to the life, times and legacy of the Oregon politician – including McCall’s well-known visionary environmental accomplishments, as well as some of his political controversies – such as his role in the Vortex Festival, a state-sponsored rock festival modeled after Woodstock and Altamont.
The event will celebrate the release of Tom McCall and the Vortex, a new comic book about McCall that is illustrated by artist and teacher Daniel Duford and written by reporter Sarah Mirk. Duford is a Hallie Ford Fellow, is known for his “Green Man of Portland” illustrations on Portland’s MAX Green Line and is a professor at Pacific Northwest College of Art. Mirk is online editor at Bitch Magazine and was formerly a reporter for Portland Mercury.
The program will include talks by Sarah Mirk, Doug Kenck-Crispin and Vortex historian Matt Love. Dirt Vortex (featuring members of Blue Skies For Black Hearts) will provide live music. Additionally, a selection of classic Tom McCall videos will be screened, and there will be a costume contest, prizes and free birthday cake (full details here).
* The first 25 attendees will receive a copy of the comic for free; the comic will also be for sale at the event.
