Look who’s performing at the gala!

We have a lot of surprises planned for the night — but here’s a sneak preview of the amazing performance we’ll be featuring at the Untold Stories gala.

 

Spoken Word and Emcee – Renee Mitchell

S. Renee Mitchell, MBA, is an award-winning writer, teaching artist and Creative Revolutionist with decades of experience with community-based social justice projects. She was nominated twice in 2005 and 2008 for the Pulitzer Prize for her work as a Metro Columnist for the Oregonian newspaper and was the recipient of the 2015 Yolanda D. King Drum Major Award. Renee is a powerful voice in the poetry, literary, and performance communities, working with local organizations such as Literary Arts, White Bird, and Vanport Mosaic. Renee also founded a youth-voice and poetry initiative, Spit/WRITE.

 


Comedy – Bri Pruett

Bri Pruett is a stand-up comic and improviser from Portland, Oregon. In 2016 she won the Willamette Week reader’s poll for Best Comedian in Portland and Splitsider.com named her a “comic-to-watch.” She’s appeared on Dan Savage’s Savage Lovecast, Doug Loves Movies and NPR’s Live Wire(to which she is a frequent contributor). Her live performances include: TBA Festival,Bridgetown,Riot LA, SF Sketch Fest, All Jane Comedy Festival, Bumbershoot and more.

 

 

 

Musical Performance – Toshi Onizuka

newtoshi.jpgToshi Onizuka was born in Tokyo and began playing guitar at twenty. In 1993 he moved to Seville, Spain and for five years immersed himself in the Spanish music scene. In 1997 he released his first solo CD, Toshi, an effort that featured musicians from Spain and Brazil and included all original songs written and produced by Toshi. In September 2008 Toshi released his second solo CD, Voy Con Fusión, a creation consisting of flamenco, jazz, rock, and hip hop. He has collaborated with a variety of local artists including Lawson Fusao Inada, Portland Taiko, Bobby Torres, and Aaron Meyer.

And next week is KYC’s Portland Urban Market! Portland Urban Market is an all ages and FREE event with dozens of vendors showcasing food, culture, music, retail, drinks, and art from creatives and makers of color in Oregon.  RSVP and share with your friends!

On October 21st at Revolution Hall, KYC is co-sponsoring a Portland City Commissioner candidates forum on housing crisis and social justice, called “Rents, Tents, Development: Who does City Council Represent?” RSVP here.
