Oregon History Comics Workshop

da vinci workshop
In Spring 2011, Know Your City designed a two-week workshop for daVinci Middle School in which students researched the history of N/ NE Portland, and created comics based on their experiences. The project was loosely based on our Oregon History Comics publication.

Students first took a tour of N/ NE Portland, and met with several community leaders. This was supplemented with short readings on the area, and discussion. Then, over six sessions, students worked with reporter and comics creator Sarah Mirk to create mini-comics on subjects such as Dr. Denorval Unthank, the Vanport Flood and the construction of Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

The project was part of a larger program, the Emerson Street Project, a community garden space in North Portland – with community partners Groundwork Portland. The program was supported, in part, with funds from the Office of Neighborhood Involvement.
